ICY BOX IB-1817M-C31 External USB-C Enclosure for M.2 NVMe SSD
I bought a Crucial T500 1TB SSD as per AI chatgpt's recommendation to get it inside the PC. After buying the PC, chatgpt told me that it doesn't go there and I have to buy ICY BOX. So I bought it, put an SSD in it and plugged it into the USB in the back of the PC. It works, all OK, but I've stopped trusting chatgpt on AI AI.
I bought my first frame shortly after launch when I needed something to hold fast and powerful SSDs. I bought my fourth model this year and they all still work. As I write in the benefits, it also supports 4TB drives (I don't have any larger than 4TB, otherwise I'd try it with them) and for me it's an honest piece of good old technology - yes, it may not have a nice tool-less drive installation, nor is it the fastest for swapping, but in terms of cooling it's the absolute top of the range.
Massive piece of aluminium
excellent cooling - I use it on my Renegade Fury 2 TB, which heats like a stove
against the documentation I have verified and personally tested that it also supports 4 TB models - I have e.g. Crucial T500 4TB variant - it has NAND chips on both sides and fits including the cooling cover and heat transfer pad
Supports a wide range of m.2 drives - I have dozens of them at home and for all larger transfers I used this frame due to the fact that it is practically one of the few frames that offers really decent cooling
However, nowadays there is still no adequate replacement for powerful SSDs - brands like Ugreen, Acasa, etc. they have working bezels, but they get hot within a moment of operation and the disk starts throttling anyway
I have 4 pcs at home and they all work even years after purchase = definitely recommended
I also like the packaging - you get a nice suede bag that fits the frame and the necessary cables
I also appreciate the fact that in the package is a straight adapter to USB-A, not all devices always have USB-C free, so I welcome it.
I also appreciate the ability to switch the disk to RO state - I use it when connecting to "unproven" machines
you can tell that this model is an older design - it is not suitable for frequent disc replacement, as a screwdriver is needed for replacement
its advantage = a piece of aluminum, is also a disadvantage, because it has more weight and is not suitable for long-term wiring in USB-C e.g. from MB, this disadvantage is eliminated with USB-A, the port is more robust
it's a piece of aluminum so it cools, cools, cools (passively) versus https://m.alza.cz/axagon-eem2-ub2-arrow-box-for-m-2-nvme-ssd-usb-c-10-gbps-black-d12555878. htm the temperature of the housing surface is about 50%
for a demanding user the price / performance ratio absolutely unbeatable.
maybe the weight is slightly higher, but again at the expense of a relatively decent passive cooling it is a plus rather than a minus.
