The belt heats up as you use it, so you can't run for more than 10 minutes at a time without shoes. The engine part doesn't seem to be warming up. It's probably the belt rubbing against the backing plate.
The belt from the factory was hardly lubricated at all, but we expected that from previous reviews and we also bought hopefully good quality push oil for the belts and lubricated it properly.
