I don't mind the kettle beeping, it's not that frequent.
I used to buy cheap glass kettles, mostly Sencor SWK 1785BK, which after about +/- 1 year "went out" - heating element or thermostat/switch. This kettle switches off "softly" a few seconds after reaching temperature, so burning the heating element and thermostat is not so much of a risk in my opinion - cheap kettles switched off after a longer boiling time.
The water smells quite plastic, although only the lid on the all-glass container is plastic. So far, after about 14 days, there is no let up in the smell.
The lid is fully removable, not hinged to the kettle. Because I don't want the water to come into contact with the plastic both hot and cold, I take the lid off, which requires both hands and the water is precipitated on the lid, which usually runs off somewhere on the substrate.
