I don't recommend having it sent to an alza box either, it goes in an antistatic bag without any security.
I picked up with personal collection at the central warehouse and the discs were perfectly fine (after previous experience with shipping I didn't risk it anymore)
Quite quiet operation
Fits great in my NAS

I hope that the drives will still be as reliable as ever, I'm just sorry that WD started to add firmware that is not compatible with the previous version S. M. A. R. T. I hope there's not some hidden villain in there.

The 8TB WD Red Pro, which I have had for a couple of years now, is problem-free

Unfortunately, the new 8TB Red Pro WD80005FFBX series got a new S. M. A. R. Firmware that my decade-old NAS no longer understands. It is not possible to perform a preventive check of the state of the S disk. M. A. R. T.

I ordered, upon delivery it had a cut or puncture in the anti-static packaging. The BIOS only detects the model, but does not learn more about it. In Linux, the kernel reports IDENTIFY_FAILED which is either a communication error (cable) or a HW failure. Since I connected another WD RED 8TB to the same cable and it worked without any problems, the fault would be in the HW - possibly a blocked platter after a crash. I put in a claim with Alza, and instead of settling the claim it was rejected, with the proviso that I should pass it on to an authorised repairer. Subsequently, the order was cancelled and the disc returned to Alza. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes on sale again..: -( The packaging is lousy, only in bubble wrap, and it's possible that it fell out of the carrier during shipping. As the disc is not a tea box, they should package and handle it much better. Based on the discussion, it's not a coincidence.
I don't know.
It's not working.

WD was the favourite and the obvious choice. However, these discs have a high rate of "junk", probably from the factory. After more than 4 pcs have been inserted into the system, the NAS or the disk array of the camera system reports errors or. erroneous sectors without possible correction. The disk is then rejected by the system. Followed by a claim, replacement. If the disk boots up, it behaves half-way afterwards. But. the devil knows what's going on and what's going to happen next.

On the first day, collect it, take photos from all angles and check for any mechanical damage, fit it, and take it for a long S-curve run. M. A. R. T. and only once everything has gone smoothly should you start using it, because you really don’t want to have to make a complaint after 14 days without photographic evidence and nerves of steel. The disc itself is fine. It’s reasonably noisy, but only if you’re really putting it through its paces. What’s a bit of a problem with some models is the lack of centre holes for the screws (see picture), they’re only at the edges, so if you have hard drive trays in the case that require those centre holes, you’re in a bit of a pickle, because you’ll only be able to mount them using the two outer holes, and these aren’t sufficient to stabilise the drive, so the drive will rattle around in the tray – watch out for that.
The centre holes for the screws are missing
