This external NAS expansion unit increases the capacity of your existing disk array and backs up data. The Tower desktop device can hold up to eight hard drives or SSDs. It connects to the host system via an SFF-8088 or SFF-8644 interface. The included QXP PCIe card provides a transfer speed of up to 24 Gb/s across four independent SATA 6Gb/s channels. Specialised software within the operating system manages the storage space. Users can configure the disk array via the Storage & Snapshots Manager application in the QTS environment. When connected to Windows or Ubuntu computers, the QNAP JBOD Manager tool is used. The software displays the current status of individual drives and the temperature of the entire device in real time. The system logs all events and sends alerts when errors occur.

High-Speed Interface
The QNAP TL-D800S NAS expansion unit uses the SFF-8088 interface, which supports four SATA 6Gb/s channels. Each hard drive has its own dedicated line, which eliminates write bottlenecks. This connection method ensures stable read and write speeds for smooth backup processes. Compared to standard USB or eSATA interfaces, it shows significantly higher data throughput.
Secure Hard Drive Storage
The design of the QNAP TL-D800S NAS expansion unit includes eight bays for 3.5" SATA HDDs or 2.5" SATA SSDs. The individual trays have mechanical locks that prevent the accidental removal of drives during operation. Physically locking the drive bays protects stored data from unauthorised tampering in the workplace. Drives can be swapped after unlocking them with the included key.
Expansion Unit Installation
Included with the QNAP TL-D800S NAS expansion unit is a QXP PCIe expansion card, which the user installs directly into a free slot in a computer or server. The connection to the external enclosure is handled by the supplied 1m cables. The hardware supports direct connection to selected devices running the QTS or QuTS hero operating system. This gives the system administrator immediate access to new drive bays without the need for complex network configuration.
Support for Various File Systems
The QNAP TL-D800S NAS expansion unit works with many volume formats depending on the connected host system. The supported file systems include NTFS, HFS+, EXT4, and exFAT. Users can format individual drives for easy file sharing between different platforms. In standalone external drive mode, each bay acts as an independent storage unit.
Backup
When connected to a computer with a Windows or Ubuntu operating system, software volumes can be created. The QNAP TL-D800S NAS expansion unit offers easy setup of JBOD or RAID arrays to increase data security. For advanced hardware protection, compatible third-party RAID controllers can be installed. This makes the device a versatile storage solution for various backup scenarios.
