Sensor and image processor
The back-illuminated APS-C size CMOS image sensor operates at a resolution of 25.74Mpx. A special UV/IR cut filter on the front surface of the lens improves overall colour reproduction. The GR ENGINE 7 processor then processes the data, rendering fine details faithfully. Sensitivity can be set up to ISO 204800 for working in low-light conditions.
HDF technology
This camera integrates the Highlight Diffusion Filter (HDF) technology developed by Ricoh. A special built-in filter is used to quickly create soft and gentle images with diffused highlights at the press of a button. This creative versatility expands the possibilities for visual expression in still photography without the need for complex post-processing. You can instantly switch between a sharp, clear rendering and a softly toned look.
Fast and precise autofocus
The hybrid autofocus system combines image-plane phase-difference detection with contrast detection. A redesigned lens barrel and responsive data readout shorten the start-up time to approximately 0.6 seconds, which is a new record for the GR series. The system offers advanced features with face and eye detection for precise targeting. The fine-tuned algorithm also performs reliably in low-light conditions and dark environments.
Five-axis image stabilisation
The shake reduction mechanism moves the sensor itself along five axes, instantly correcting common angular and rotational blur, as well as shift blur when shooting close-ups. The correction algorithm provides an efficiency of up to 6° shutter speed in the centre and 4° at the edge, according to the CIPA 2024 standard. In addition, the stabilisation unit enables AA filter simulation to reduce moiré and correct the horizon.
Ergonomics and touch control
The compact body, with a width of 109.4mm, has a deeper grip for a secure hold. The rear is dominated by a fixed 76.2mm touch-sensitive LCD screen. Users can use the Full Press Snap function to instantly focus at a preset distance. You can easily move autofocus points or navigate menus with a simple touch.
Connectivity and internal memory
The camera includes 53GB of internal memory, which can be expanded with micro SD cards. The wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 interface makes it easy to connect to a smartphone. The USB-C connector also supports DisplayPort video output for external display. The integrated USB-C port is used for fast data transfer and charging the DB-120 battery.

RICOH GR IV HDF camera review
Although compact cameras have largely been pushed out of the market by mobile phones, and some manufacturers have even stopped producing them altogether, they have recently been making a comeback. This is especially true for more interesting and exceptional models that are significantly different from mobiles and earlier compacts. The Ricoh GR IV is exactly that kind of compact camera, unique in many ways, and therefore fully deserving of its own detailed user review. As the name suggests, this is its fourth generation, and it stands out primarily for its large sensor and fast fixed-focus lens, all while maintaining minimalist dimensions and controls.
