This rating, also known as Ingress Protection (IP), defines the product's resistance against the ingress of foreign objects, typically dust, and liquids. The first digit, "5", means that the device is protected against dust. While complete dust ingress is not prevented, dust will not enter in a quantity sufficient to impair the proper function of the device. The second digit, "4", specifies protection against water. It guarantees that the device is resistant to splashing water from all directions. In practice, this means that headphones or a speaker with this rating can easily handle sweat during sports or light rain, but are not intended for submersion in water.
